Treatment of Glaucoma

The term glaucoma actually refers to damage of the optic nerve and can cause blindness or varying degrees of vision loss if left untreated. If treated, damage caused from glaucoma can often be stopped. However, the damage that it does cause is irreversible. In fact, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness, but vision loss can be prevented with early detection and treatment of the disease.

There are several treatment options for patients with glaucoma. Eye drops are a common treatment and work well for many patients. Laser surgery is another common glaucoma treatment. It helps relieve eye pressure by aiding with fluid drainage. In some cases, the surgeon may opt for drainage implants. While these treatments do not restore vision lost due to glaucoma, they can stop the disease’s advancement.

Treatment of Cataracts

Cataracts is a condition of the eye that is characterized by a cloudy, white film over the center of the eye. The disease attacks the area just behind the pupil, causing it to become clouded due to the presence of clumps of naturally occurring proteins, giving the appearance of a film over the eye. As the film grows, it blocks the eye from receiving light. This prevents the patient from seeing images. Cataracts can form after an eye injury but it is possible for a person to be born with them.

Regular eye checkups and keeping contact or eyeglass prescription current can be effective as well as wearing adequate eye protection when going out in the sunlight. Sometimes this is not enough though, and the patient may elect to have surgery. Cataract surgery involves the removal of the lenses on the eye and replacing them with intraocular lenses (IOLs) which are artificial lenses. This is typically done as laser cataract surgery.
