The cornea can be affected by a variety of conditions, including bacterial or viral infections, trauma, genetic or degenerative disorders, autoimmune disorders, nutritional deficiencies, allergies, dystrophies, and ectatic disorders such as keratoconus.
Our fellowship-trained cornea specialists provide advanced cornea treatment using the latest technology to diagnose and manage a range of conditions, helping restore clarity and comfort to your vision.
Cornea Treatment Options
Corneal Transplants
A surgical cornea treatment procedure to replace part of your cornea with donor tissue. Most patients notice improved vision after surgery. Some sight problems, such as astigmatism or nearsightedness, will remain, but these can normally be corrected with contact lenses or glasses. While complications are uncommon, risks include eye infections, increased eye pressure (glaucoma), cataracts, or rejection of the donor tissue.
Corneal Crosslinking
A minimally invasive cornea treatment for patients with progressive corneal ectasia, particularly keratoconus. Using ultraviolet (UV) light and a photosensitizer (riboflavin), this procedure strengthens the chemical bonds in the cornea. The goal is to halt progressive, irregular changes in corneal shape. This outpatient procedure only requires numbing eye drops and a mild sedative, allowing for a quick recovery and brief follow-up.
Fuchs’ Dystrophy & DSEK/DMEK
Fuchs’ Dystrophy is a condition that affects the endothelium, the inner layer of the cornea. Over time, it causes the cornea to swell and vision to become cloudy. Descemet Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK) and Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) are advanced corneal procedures that replace only the diseased back layer of the cornea with healthy donor tissue. Because they are much less invasive than a traditional full-thickness corneal transplant, DSEK and DMEK typically involve less risk and a shorter recovery.
