Although LASIK eye surgery is a popular procedure around the world, there is still a significant amount of misinformation surrounding it. We want to help set the record straight by debunking some of the most common LASIK myths.
Myth 1: LASIK is for nearsighted patients only
When the LASIK procedure was first developed, it was only designed to treat nearsightedness. For whatever reason, this idea got stuck in the public’s subconscious, and many people still believe it to be true.
Contemporary LASIK procedures are successful in treating not only nearsightedness, but farsightedness and astigmatism as well. If you’re suffering from these conditions, don’t fall victim to the false claim that LASIK has nothing to offer you.
Myth 2: There’s a long recovery time from LASIK
Some people believe that any procedure that modifies the tissue of the eyes must entail a long recovery process. It’s natural when you think about it—the eyes are very sensitive organs—but in the case of LASIK it’s not true at all.
LASIK patients may experience some discomfort for approximately 24-48 hours following their procedure, but most will be completely recovered after that time. Mild pain relievers and eye drops usually are enough to alleviate the discomfort in the days after the surgery, and it’s normal for many patients to return to work the following day.
Myth 3: I’m too young or old for LASIK
Whether or not you are a good candidate for LASIK depends primarily on the condition of your eyes, not your age. In fact, there is no upper age limit for the LASIK procedure, so don’t be afraid to ask your eye doctor about the possibility of LASIK. For younger patients, the FDA has approved LASIK procedures for anyone age 18 and over.
Myth 4: All lasers in LASIK are the same
It’s important to note that the LASIK procedure has undergone some significant technological advances since its introduction nearly 30 years ago. Not all LASIK lasers are created equal, and which clinic you choose will ultimately decide which LASIK laser will be used in your procedure.
It’s important to talk to the doctors at your eye clinic and ensure that they are using the most up-to-date LASIK technology possible to achieve ideal results for your surgery.
Myth 5: The doctor I use doesn’t matter because the laser does all the work
It’s true that the laser is an integral part of the LASIK procedure, but without a skilled physician behind it, it’s only a tool without a purpose. Because each LASIK procedure is customized to correct your unique vision problems, it takes an experienced and skilled hand for optimal success.
