Getting to Know Dr. Jason Miles, New Cataract and Cornea Specialist

Dr. Jason Miles

Dr. Jason F. Miles, M.D., is honored to bring patient-focused eye care to Northeast Florida. He joins the Florida Eye Specialists team after completing his internship in internal medicine, residency in ophthalmology, and fellowship in cornea and external disease at The University of Florida / UF Health in Gainesville. Through his practice, he hopes to develop strong doctor-patient relationships and guide each patient toward the best decision for their eyesight.

We sat down with Dr. Miles to learn more about his background, experience, and how he plans to deliver excellence in eye care at Florida Eye Specialists.

Q: Good morning, Dr. Miles. To start off, tell us a little bit about yourself.

A: I’m a Florida native, born in Gainesville and raised in Ormond Beach. I enjoy spending time with my family and anything that gets me outside and moving. I love to surf, bike, exercise, and grow vegetables in my backyard.

Q: Why did you choose to specialize in eye care?

A: I really enjoy how delicate the procedures are in ophthalmology. The eye is an incredible organ that provides us with one of the most important, if not the most important of all the senses. The ability to be a specialist in this field is humbling.

Q: Tell us about your career so far.

A: I attended the University of Florida for my undergraduate degree, Florida State University for medical school, and then returned to the University of Florida and UF Health for my residency and fellowship.

Completing my ophthalmology training was a pivotal point for me. It’s what I’ve been working toward and it opened up so many doors. I spent four years in a residency, studying the eye and working to improve my technique. Now, I look forward to growing and learning more throughout my career.

Q: Tell us more about your specialties. How did you come to focus on these areas?

A: My fellowship in cornea and external disease at UF provided me the opportunity to care for patients with a variety of eye infections or growths on the eye, such as a pterygium. In addition, I was able to learn the art of corneal transplantation. My mentors at the program provided me with a solid foundation of knowledge that I will use throughout my career as a corneal specialist.

Q: What is your approach to patient care?

A: I take care of my patients as if they were related to me and get to know them on a personal level. I strive to build a relationship where decision-making is a shared responsibility between us. In my view, it’s my job to provide the best options for care and help patients make an informed decision. I treat our relationships like a partnership.

Q: What drew you to Florida Eye Specialists?

A: This is an excellent practice and I respect how many of our partners come from academic backgrounds. These doctors are so skilled in their field that they get to teach medical students and fellows everything they know about their craft, and also take part in monumental research studies. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with them.

Q: What are you the most excited about coming to Florida Eye Specialists?

A: Northeast Florida is where I grew up, so I’m excited to be home. For my practice, I’m most excited to perform cataract surgeries for patients in need. It’s a really gratifying practice. By helping patients regain their sight, I hope to help them return to activities that were once impossible, due to limitations in their vision. Cataract surgery can change life as they know it and it’s extremely rewarding to see that happen.
