Am I A Candidate?

Thanks to All-Laser LASIK, most people who meet the general age and health requirements are candidates. Our advanced All-Laser LASIK technology can treat a broad range of prescriptions – including mid to sever nearsightedness, farsightedness and stigmatism. So even if you’ve been turned down for laser vision correction in the past, you may be able to have All-Laser LASIK at Florida Eye Specialists.

How would you like to live your life without glasses and contact lenses? As you may know from your vision correction research, LASIK eye surgery or other refractive surgery alternatives can help you achieve your goals. Imagine driving at night without glasses or being able to see at the beach without requiring visual aids. This is all possible with laser vision correction, but we must first determine if you are a LASIK candidate.

Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK laser eye surgery. A complete and thorough eye exam is essential to identify patients who are poor candidates. Surgery on these patients may lead to poor outcome and harm the eye. At Florida Eye Specialists, our Jacksonville LASIK eye doctors will examine your eyes, your ocular history, and your medical history to assess whether laser vision correction is a good option for you.

Qualifying as a LASIK Candidate

  • Candidates must be over 18.
  • Candidates must have no diseases or health issues of the eyes, including cataracts or glaucoma.
  • Candidates must have had a stable vision prescription for at least a year.

NOTE: Patients who are not candidates for LASIK procedures may qualify for a number of effective alternative procedures, including phakic iols (intraocular lenses). One of our experienced LASIK surgeons will evaluate your needs and discuss your options at your initial consultation.

Conditions Which May Limit Your Ability to Have LASIK

The following conditions may limit your ability to have LASIK eye surgery:

  • History of Accutane use for acne
  • History of active autoimmune disease (for example, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)
  • History of keloids
  • Diabetes
  • Immunocompromised for any reason (for example AIDS)
  • Collagen vascular disease
  • Medication use such as steroids or immunosuppressants which may affect healing
  • History of ocular disease
  • Keratoconus or corneal thinning
  • Corneal scarring
  • Glaucoma
