What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are cloudings of the natural lens in the eye that occur gradually over time, often without noticeable symptoms early on. As cataracts progress, they can lead to blurry vision, difficulty with night driving, and sensitivity to glare. Other signs include double vision in one eye, poor night vision, fading or yellowing of colors, and frequent changes in glasses or contact lens prescriptions.

Symptoms of Cataracts

Cataracts typically develop slowly and painlessly over time – in fact, in the early stages, symptoms may be so mild that you may not even realize your vision is changing. However, as the cataracts become more dense, you will eventually experience one or more of the following symptoms:

      • Painless blurring of vision

      • Sensitivity to glare and light

      • Double vision in one eye

      • Poor night vision

      • Fading or yellowing of colors

      • Frequent changes in glasses or contact lens prescriptions

    Cataract Surgery: How It Works

Cataract surgery is a highly effective procedure that involves removing the cloudy natural lens of the eye and replacing it with a new intraocular lens (IOL). At Florida Eye Specialists, we use advanced techniques to ensure the procedure is as minimally invasive and comfortable as possible.

We perform cataract surgery using a “no-stitch, no-shot, no-patch clear cornea” approach, which helps minimize discomfort and allows for faster recovery. Most patients experience significant improvements in their vision shortly after the surgery, with many returning to their normal activities within a few days.

    Traditional Cataract Surgery

Our surgeons use sound wave technology to break up the cataract into micro-fragments, which are then suctioned out. Afterward, a new lens implant is placed in the eye. While this is a more manual procedure, it remains a safe and effective technique with a long track record of success.

    Laser Cataract Surgery (LenSx)

This technique uses precise laser energy to target the cataract with high accuracy, reducing the risk of complications. It is especially effective for patients with astigmatism.  Overall, this technique offers a more comfortable experience and faster recovery.

The Light Adjustable Lens is a new cataract lens implant that can be adjusted after cataract surgery. This technology allows patients to test drive their vision and customize their prescription to their lifestyle, just like with glasses or contacts.
